The block is full: finding a National Summit on Education hotel

The organizer’s page says it plainly: the hotel block is now full. It suggests a few other hotels near the venue. If you would rather sleep in a quieter neighborhood and ride in each morning, a bed and breakfast in Kalorama is another kind of National Summit on Education hotel option.

We are not a downtown hotel, and we will not pretend to be. From Dupont Circle, take the Red Line to Gallery Place, then the Green or Yellow Line one stop to Mt Vernon Sq, next to the Marriott Marquis. Dupont Circle Metro is a 10-minute walk from our front door. In return for the ride, you get a room in an 1893 house on a residential street, and a calm evening after a full day of strategy sessions.

Getting to the Marriott Marquis from Kalorama

The Metro is the simple route. Dupont Circle Metro is a 10-minute walk from the house. From there, take the Red Line to Gallery Place, then the Green or Yellow Line one stop to Mt Vernon Sq, next to the Marriott Marquis. A cab or ride-hail works too, and it can make sense on the early Thursday and Friday starts or when you are carrying materials.

That ride is the daily commute from our house, so weigh it when you compare each National Summit on Education hotel on your list. Allow extra time on the first morning.

Summit schedule and your mornings

The organizer’s schedule starts early, which matters when you pick a National Summit on Education hotel. Here is how it lines up with a stay at the house:

  • Wednesday, December 2: early registration check-in runs from 3:30 to 7:00 PM, and the welcome reception is from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Our check-in opens at 4 PM, so you can arrive, settle into your room and head downtown for the reception.
  • Thursday, December 3: registration opens at 7:30 AM, with a networking breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 AM and the opening breakfast keynote from 8:30 to 9:15 AM. Strategy sessions, a lunch keynote and a general session keynote fill the rest of the day.
  • Friday, December 4: registration opens at 7:00 AM, and the summit ends with a closing lunch keynote from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM.

Breakfast at the house depends on your rate. A homemade breakfast comes only with the Standard Rate and the 2-day refundable rate. We serve it at 8:30, 8:45 or 9 AM, and you book your time in advance. Other rates do not include breakfast. On Thursday and Friday the summit serves an early networking breakfast and holds a breakfast keynote, starting at 8:30 AM on Thursday and 8:15 AM on Friday. If you plan to be at the Marquis for those, our breakfast times will not fit those mornings.

On Friday, you can check out in the morning, leave your bags in the parlor, go to the closing lunch, and pick them up by 5 PM. A later pickup can be arranged in advance.
