The Best Washington DC Neighborhoods to Visit This Summer

From the incredible history that sits at your fingertips in Washington DC neighborhoods to the exciting buzz of restaurants, bars, and local shops in places like Georgetown and Dupont Circle, there’s never been a better time than now to get out and explore this wonderful city. The real Washington DC goes far beyond what most of us associate with this powerful city – and that’s something you’ll have to venture into the Washington DC neighborhoods to discover.

There are more Washington DC neighborhoods than we can cover here, so we’re going to focus on the four neighborhoods closest to us and which offer the best diversity of attractions for guests at our Washington DC Bed and Breakfast. Between visiting Kalorama Park, Dupont Circle, Capitol Hill, and Georgetown, we have no doubt you’ll leave with a much better understanding and appreciation of everything this city offers.

Kalorama

We’ll start with Kalorama, which is often considered an extension of Dupont Circle just to the south. It’s one of the most beautiful Washington DC neighborhoods, with quiet, tree-lined streets and magnificent historic homes. Parts of this neighborhood overlook the beautiful and expansive Rock Creek Park. Though it borders the lively Dupont Circle, Kalorama is known to be a quiet destination with that “do not disturb” vibe you crave while on vacation.

Highlights of the Kalorama neighborhood, aside from the magnificent homes and famous residents you’ll find here include The Spanish Steps and the stately embassies lining Connecticut and Massachusetts Avenues. Given the ease of getting around and the tranquil ambiance, it’s perfect that Kalorama is also the neighborhood in which you’ll find our Washington DC Bed and Breakfast!

Dupont Circle

One of the most lively and popular Washington DC neighborhoods is Dupont Circle. Of course, the namesake, Dupont Circle, is well-known for its famous traffic snarls. There is far more to this fantastic neighborhood – especially when you’re exploring on foot. Recently, we covered a number of the top Dupont Circle restaurants because the food scene truly is divine. It’s second only to the fabulous boutiques, bookstores, and other unique shops you’ll find lining the streets of this exciting Washington DC neighborhood.

While you’re visiting Dupont Circle, don’t miss your chance for people watching at the beautiful Dupont Circle Fountain. Art lovers will want to explore the Phillips Collection, which was the first American Museum of Modern Art. The remainder of Embassy Row on Massachusetts Avenue also extends into Dupont Circle – so that’s a great way to connect your time in these two excellent Washington DC neighborhoods. If you’re in town on a Sunday morning, the Dupont Circle Farmers Market is a wonderful and lively place to browse, followed by a cup of coffee and some browsing at the famed Kramerbooks.

Other highlights of this neighborhood include the National Geographic Museum, the Woodrow Wilson House, the Heurich House Museum, and DC Improv.

A gorgeous view over the river from Georgetown, one of the top Washington DC neighborhoods

Georgetown

If you’re looking for a blend of history and modern city living, then Georgetown is the place for you. Georgetown is located on the Potomac River and is one of the most popular Washington DC neighborhoods. In Georgetown, you’ll find historic cobblestoned streets, stately homes, and beautiful tree-lined streets. Mixed in with that is some of the best shopping in the city, not to mention some fantastic restaurants.

M Street is where you’ll want to head if shopping is on your “to-do” list. You’ll find plenty of mainstream stores here mixed in with an exclusive range of high-end retailers, not to mention upscale home design stores, plenty of unique boutiques, and many of the city’s best art galleries. If you’d rather not spend your time shopping, though, there’s still plenty to do in this neighborhood.

Hop on one of the boat tours and cruise the historic C&O Canal or head to the Waterfront Park for a relaxing day in the sun. You can even rent kayaks here and get out on the water yourself, or hop on a bike and explore the great trails in the area, including the C&O Canal Towpath and the Capital Cresent Trail. In the evening, unwind at one of the great bars or restaurants located on the Georgetown harbor. Georgetown is one of the oldest Washington DC neighborhoods, and it never disappoints.

Capitol Hill

Capitol Hill is one of the most famous and well-known Washington DC neighborhoods, thanks to its central role in our Nation’s political history. It’s here, of course, that you’ll find some of the Nation’s most powerful government entities, including the US Capitol building, the Supreme Court, and the US House and Senate offices. The surrounding streets are filled with historic, 19th-century rowhouses that add an element of charm to Capitol Hill, not to mention an incredibly diverse array of restaurants and bars.

It’s worth the time to tour the US Capitol Building. Still, other top attractions in this neighborhood include the Library of Congress, the Folger Shakespeare Library, Eastern Market, and the US Botanic Garden.
