Great Falls Park

Summer is almost over and it’s almost time for us to welcome Fall.  One of the great place in the Washington area during Fall is the Great Falls Park, an 800-acre park located along the Potomac River. AT only few miles of downtown Washington, DC, this park is one of the most popular with local residents and tourists who are visiting the area.

Great Falls Park offers a variety of activities including hiking, picnicking, kayaking, rock climbing, bicycling, and horseback riding.  Above the Great Falls Park Visitor Center, you can follow the upper Canal Trail and view the head of the falls and the Aqueduct Dam. On the Maryland side, the Billy Goat Trail is one of the most popular  scenic places to explore.

Great Falls Park is accessible from both sides of the Potomac River. The Virginia park is located at 9200 Old Dominion Drive, McLean, Virginia.

The Maryland side is a part of the C & O Canal National Historic Park and is located off of Falls Road in Potomac. There is not access between the two sides of the Potomac River.

Great Falls Park is open from 7 a.m. until dark every day except December 25th. The Visitor Center is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily, with extended hours during the spring and summer.

There is an entrance fee of $5.00 per vehicle, including motorcycles and a $3.00 fee for visitors entering the park on foot, horseback, or bicycle.

Washington DC Restaurants

Restaurant Review: Cashion’s Eat Place

The Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle neighborhoods are filled with a variety of restaurants from casual to fine dining and any sort of ethnic cuisine you can think of. Cashion’s Eat Place offers a menu of American Fusion food . They offer dinner, brunch and an “after dark” menu. The latter menu consists of old pub favorites with a bit of a twist. The menu changes seasonally, so the ingredients comprising your meal are at their peak for the season.

My personal experience at Cashion’s was during their weekend brunch. The make classic  breakfast items and put a special Cashion’s spin on them. I enjoyed the “Sammy’s Scrapple” with biscuits a poached egg(my request, typically served with scrambled eggs) with white gravy and country potatoes. This was not your typical factory processed scrapple. The ingredients tasted fresh, and the combination of herbs was superior. The biscuit was flaky and buttery and the classic white gravy had just the right amount of richness and texture as opposed to the heaviness of it’s southern prototype. My friend enjoyed the “Sarah’s Cornmeal Waffle” with pecan butter and berries, and of course I had to try a bit. The texture of the cornmeal waffle was light and not dense as you would think with such a heavy flour, and the nuttiness of the pecan butter was the perfect compliment to the natural sweetness of the corn waffle. Paired with mimosas, this meal was the ideal way to spend an early Sunday afternoon. The decor is sleek and contemporary yet warm. I would feel comfortable wearing a cocktail dress or a pair of jeans to this restaurant.

Cashion’s Eat Place is located at 1819 Columbia Rd, just past the intersection of 18th Street and Columbia Road in the heart of Adam’s Morgan. You should expect to spend  $75+ per person for dinner, dessert and a cocktail if you wish. If you are having brunch expect to spend $20+. The atmosphere is great and so is the food. I highly suggest you dine here!

Enjoy!

Washington DC Restaurants

Heritage India

If you are looking for a good Indian restaurant in Dupont Circle while you stay with us at the Guest House, you should try Heritage India located at 1337 Connecticut Ave NW (after the circle).  The restaurant was selected by the Washingtonian as one of the “100 Very Best Restaurants”.

For lunch, the restaurant proposes a Buffet which is reasonable and has a lot of selection for meat eaters and vegetarians. Majority of the top Indian dishes are on the buffet: chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, saag paneer, lamb… The meat was very tender and the sauces were just perfect in flavor and not that spicy. The naan  (flat bread) warm and fresh was definitely a plus! For vegetarians, the buffet as a good variety of salad and dessert with fresh fruit.

The best time is during the Happy Hours: the drinks and food are pretty cheap. If you want to just go somewhere after work with some colleagues (for example) and enjoy without paying a ton of money this is the place to go!

For sure I will go back to Heritage India and next time I may go for dinner…

Washington DC Embassies

The Embassy of Ireland

The Embassy of Ireland is located at 2234 Massachusetts Ave. N.W at Sheridan Circle, in the Embassy Row neighborhood.

The original architect of the house at 2234 Massachusetts Avenue was William Penn Cresson. The Republican governor of Louisiana William P. Kellogg (1873-1877) was the first owner of the property which was purchased later by Ireland in 1949.

If you want to visit the inside of the Emabassy, there is an annual open day for members of the public at the Embassy in early May. Just check the Embassy website for more information.

The Residence of the Ambassador of Ireland, situated at 2244 S Street NW, was historically named the Frederic Delano House following its construction in 1924. Washington DC Restaurants

Teaism Tea House

Teaism is three Asian inspired tea houses  and restaurant in Washington DC. The Teaism that we have in Dupont Circle is the oldest one and it is located just off the corner of Connecticut and R streets.

The tea house serves more than two dozen varieties of tea, plus carefully chosen self-service foods to accompany them, from breakfast through dinner.  What we like it’s their bento box which is a box-shaped container which contains  rice, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables.

Besides the Japanese bento boxes, Teaism offers tandoori kebabs and sandwiches with Asian overtones.

TIP:  For lunch the average check is around $10 and for dinner count few more bucks. The place is self-service.

Washington DC Embassies

The Indonesian Embassy

The Indonesian Embassy is located at 2020 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W.Washington, D.C. 20036. The building is one of the most beautiful in town.

The Walsh-McLean House is a fabulous Beaux-Arts style, 60-room mansion, which was built in 1902 for rags-to-riches gold miner Thomas F. Walsh. The building was once the social center for Dupont Circle and it was the most expensive private house built to date, at the cost of $835,000 (about $20,000,000 in 2008). The house was purchased by the Indonesian government in 1952 for $335,000.

From gold prospectors to the Red Cross, the Hope Diamond to mysterious ghosts, the mansion hides a lot of history behind his walls…
