Washington DC Activities

Farragut Square Summer Concerts

If you will be in the vicinity of the White House or the National Geographic museum this summer, you may want to take a walk over to Farragut Square Park. This park is manicured and kept clean by DC’s parks and recreation staff throughout the year. During the week you will find Washingtonians sitting on a bench during their lunch breaks enjoying the sunshine or chatting with a colleague. Saturday mornings Batala drumming troupe practices for their upcoming performances, and this is so much fun to watch. The highlight of the summer in this area are the free summer concerts held from June to July on Wednesdays from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. The music is always rhythmic and fun. I urge you to enjoy the district as the locals do!

Farragut Square  is serviced by both the Farragut North Metro station (red line) and the Farragut West metro station (blue and orange line).  There are also several bus routes with stops adjacent to the park. Please visit metro’s website for travel options.

Enjoy!

Bistrot du coin, Washington D.C

Couple days ago, I was craving for French food and what a better way to have dinner to Bistro du Coin, one of the best French restaurant in Washington DC. So, I decided to go around 6:00pm because usually around 6:30pm the restaurant is full and the waiting line is pretty long. When you open the door you feel like you have been crossing the Atlantic and you are in a Parisian café, the decor, the ambiance, and the staff welcome you in the most simple and friendly way like it supposed to be in a real Bistrot. I got a table upstairs on the balcony (which was quieter than downstairs), overviewing the main room and the bar and believe me: what a view! It was probably one of the best table I ever had in a restaurant.

The menu was amazing; it gives you a real overview of the French cuisine and makes you discover specialties from all over the country! The café is known for his French Onion Soup, along with his ten varieties of steamed mussels…

I wanted (and I’m sure will too) try everything so I decided to order a little bit of everything. For true taste of France, try one of the pâtés or the duck confit.  The snails in garlic butter ($7.95) were a bit light on the garlic but were still very enjoyable and perfect for my appetizer.

In main course I ordered the “Bouche a la reine” (7.95) which is also names Vol au vent is the French for “windblown” to describe its lightness is a small hollow case of puff pastry which was filled with Chicken, veal sweetbreads and mushrooms in cream sauce. It was delicious! To accompany my main course I ordered the French fries which in 2006 were voted best French fries in the USA (it’s what the waiter told me and by the first bite I trusted him).

For dessert, I was too full but next time I will try one (all under $7.00) which include the classics Crème Brulee, apple tart, lemon custard, chocolate mousse, poached pear with ice cream…

The restaurant is open 7 days a week, 364 days a year (only closed on Labor day, the first Monday of September).

FLIPPIN PIZZA IN DUPONT CIRCLE

This is a great place to grab a quick bite to eat, they have pizza by the slice, calzones and pies.  We tried the pizza special  (2 slices + soda for $6 tax included) and it was delicious!  The place is very small but it is stylish, clean and friendly and it is located on Connecticut Avenue near DuPont Circle metro, an easy walk (5 minutes)  from the Guest House.  Please visit Flippin Pizza’s  web site for more information.

Enjoy it!Lucia

Presidential Eateries

Curious about some of the local flavors that President Obama enjoys while in our Nation’s Capital? There’s a great article in the DC Metro Magazine that highlights a few local favorites. Some of those include:

Ben’s Chili Bowl – Ten days before his inauguration  President Obama made a surprise visit to the iconic DC restaurant with? Vice President Biden and their entourage. He’s not the only presidential figure to enjoy a tasty chili dog. French President Sarkozy also stopped by for a bite. Ben’s Chili Bowl? has been around since 1958 and has been a staple in the community ever since. They serve a breakfast, lunch? and a no-hassle group menu at crazy hours! Located on the bustling streets of Columbia Heights on U Street, this is a great place to stop by for something something to eat that everyone can enjoy!

Blue Duck Tavern- Even President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama? have enjoyed? a romantic evening at the? Blue Duck Tavern. They celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary at this award-winning restaurant located inside the Park Hyatt hotel in the Foggy Bottom area. This top-notch American eatery serves a delicious menu created by Brian McBride and Chef de Cuisine Michael Santoro where many dishes are cooked on their signature wood-burning oven for that little something extra.

Other place the Obama’s have enjoyed while out on the town include the up and coming Komi restaurant, Restaurant Nora, Michelle Richard Citronelle, Ray’s Hell Burger? (also enjoyed by Russian President? Medvedev)? and The Good Stuff Eatery.

Agora : Formerly known as Jack’s Restaurant (American food)

Jack’s Restaurant, which is more of a bar was what we were limited to fo dinner in this are. Now we have Agora! It’s a  trendy and elegant restaurant with something unique that other eateries don’t have in the neighborhood…THE CONCEPT!!!

I will say it’s more like a tapas place where the focus is on small plates of food. It’s a place you can come to after work for happy hour or simply go to share it with a friend and savor the Mediterranean/Turkish food by trying several plates in a fantastic atmosphere.

AMBIANCE 4 out of 5

FOOD 4/5 – Even though it was great, it was a little bit oily.

SERVICE 4/5- great service, waiter very knowledgeable, always someone to refill our glasses..

THE + : The bread, which was amazing and similar to pizza crust, was on the table with the tapenade .

Freebies: Mineral Water

Service: was very professional.

PRICE: a little expensive for what you have? on your plate, but with the bread that they? constantly give you can leave full…
