The Mary McLeod Bethune House, Washington DC

The DC townhouse at 1318 Vermont Avenue, NW which is just a few minutes away from our Washington DC Hotel, was the first headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women  . It’s where Mary McLeod Bethune (political and activist) achieved her greatest national and international… From there, Bethune and the Council spearheaded strategies and developed programs that advanced the interests of African American women and the Black community.

About the house:

The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site is open year round Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The last tour starts at 4 p.m. They are closed on Sundays and also closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The Newseum, Washington DC

The Newseum serves as a showcase for news stories both old and new. The building contain several levels of galleries holding exhibits on a variety of subjects such as ”The Story of News”, the title gives a way the subject matter of this exhibit. There is an interactive news room for museum-goers to experience as well as temporary collections like the sports illustrated exhibit dedicated to the sports photographer Walter loss.

Newseum ticket prices vary according to age: the price for adult tickets are $21.95(19-64years), $17.95 for seniors (65 years plus), and $12.95 for children children(7-18years), children under 6 years old are admitted for free. They are open 7 days a week from 9am -5pm and close for few holidays.

The Newseum is located on 6th Street, NW and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. The balcony boasts a view of the US Capitol  and is adjacent to the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall. The closest metro stops are the judiciary square and gallery place metro stops both on the red line.  While visiting the Newseum why not stay at our very reasonably priced Washington DC Inn which is just a 10 minutes metro/subway ride away.

The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC

The National Museum of Women in the Arts is located at 1250 New York Avenue, NW in Washington, DC.  The museum is accessible by Metro Center station (Blue, Red lines) which is two blocks from there and the same metro line to go to our lovely Washington DC Bed and Breakfast.

The place is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the contributions of women artists. It holds more than 3,000 works from the 16th century to the present. The  NMWA also has several important special collections, including silver by 18th and 19th-century Irish and English women silversmiths.

You have also the opportunity to check the NMWA Library and Research Center (LRC) which provides researchers with information about women visual artists from all time periods and nationalities. It is open to everyone: scholars, students, researchers, curators, museum professionals, and the general public. The LRC collection includes 18,500 volumes of books and exhibition catalogs, 50 periodical titles, and research files on 18,000 individual women artists.

The Kreeger Museum

The Kreeger Museum is a private, non-profit art museum located in the former residence of David and Carmen Kreeger at 2401 Foxhall Road, NW, Washington DC. The building was designed in 1963 by Pritzker Prize winning architect Philip Johnson with Richard Foster, on five and a half wooded acres overlooking the nation’s capital.

The collection features 19th and 20th century paintings and sculptures, with works by internationally known artists such as Boudin, Cézanne, Monet, MoorePicasso, Rodin, and van Gogh.  Also included in the collection are outstanding examples of traditional African and Asian art.

The museum is open to the general public on most Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and offers pre-booked tours each day from Tuesday to Friday at 10.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m.

American University Museum at the Katzen, Washington DC

The American University Museum is located in the Katzen Arts Center on the American University Campus. The museum focuses on international art due to their global commitment to human rights and social justice. They also show political exhibitions and support the art local artists in the area. The museum celebrates each exhibitions opening with an “Artist Reception”. There are also “Gallery Talks” regularly scheduled so art enthusiasts may have the opportunity to speak with the artist about their work. The Katzen Art center also holds activities for children on a regular basis.

The American University Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am to 4pm. The museum is fully accessible for persons with disabilities. Admission to the museum is free to all ages. Please visit the website for additional visitor information.

The Museum is accessible by the Tenleytown metro station on the red line. There is a shuttle located at the metro station that will bring you directly to the Katzen Art Center. The American University Shuttle runs in 10 to 15 minute intervals. There are also several metro bus lines that will take  you the can take to the University (N2, N3, N4,N6, N8 and M4).
