The Octagon House and Museum

The Octagon House and Museum is located in Washington, DC at 18th St and New York Ave, NW and it is the oldest museum in the US dedicated to architecture and design.  The building was designed by Dr. William Thorton (who also designed the U.S. Capitol) and is an example of Federal period architecture. The Octagon House has a place in presidential history where it served as the temporary residence of President Madison after the British burned the White House.

The house had extensive restoration work from 1989 to 1995 and again from 2005-2009. It is open for self-guided audio tours Tuesday-Thursday from 2-4 PM.  The museum is just 15 minutes walking distance from our bed and breakfast Washington DC.

The Anderson House

The Anderson House was once the home of Lars Anderson III, a diplomat from a wealthy family in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The mansion is located in the heart of Dupont Circle, Washington DC, 10 minutes away from our Washington DC accommodations, where the Anderson family held inaugural balls and celebrations throughout Washington’s social season. The goal of Washington’s elite at that time was to make the nation’s capital a stylish and modern city with a great senses of patriotism, and the Anderson played a major role in that movement.

The home is now headquarters of the Cincinnati Society which has the mission to preserve the history of and honor the veterans of the Revolutionary War.

The Anderson House is open and free to the public for public tours Tuesday through Saturday from 1pm-4pm. The mansion is closed, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day, as well as selects times of year for Society meetings.

Woodrow Wilson House and Museum near the American Guest House Bed and Breakfast

Woodrow Wilson was the 28th president of the United States. The last three years of his life were spent in the Woodrow Wilson House, now a national historic landmark and house museum that focuses on the years President Woodrow resided in Washington, DC. The museum’s mission is to  foster public knowledge of Wilson’s public life and ideals for future generations through the guided tours, exhibitions and educational programs.

The Woodrow House is open from Tuesday through Saturdays from 10am-4pm. The museums is closed on Mondays and major Holidays. Admission for adults is $10, $8 for Senior Citizens, $5 for students and children under the age of $12 are admitted for free. Please contact the museum at least three days prior to your visit if you require a reservation for a group tour.

The museum is located 5 blocks from the Dupont Circle metro station and only 5 minutes away from our Washington DC lodging.

134th Annual Easter Egg Roll at The White House!

Make this Easter the best ever!  Every year the White House opens up its South Lawn to over 35,000 people for the 134th Annual Easter Egg Roll.  Anyone can register at the White House Web Page for a chance to be entered into a lottery sponsored by Rec.Gov and register by March 5, 2012.  Winners will be announced March 12, 2012 and the event will be held on April 09, 2012.  Register soon and get a chance of a lifetime. Admission is free and open to one submission per household.  Tickets are non-transferable.

The American Guest house is located only a mile from the White House and transportation (42 Metro Bus) runs every 10-15 minutes in front of our door ($1.75 Fare).

Washington DC Museums

The Renwick Gallery

The Renwick Gallery which is located not that far from our Washington DC Inn is a branch of the Smithsonian Institute’s  American Art Museum and it’s also the home of the American Art Museum’s crafts and decorative arts program. The exhibitions contain both contemporary and traditional American crafts created in various mediums and materials such as clay, glass and wood just to name a few.

The Renwick Gallery’s admission is free in the tradition of the Smithsonian Institute’s museums and the Galleries hours of operation are Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-5:30pm daily (the gallery closes on December 25th each year). Please visit the website for additional information regarding guided tours.

The Renwick Gallery is located in proximity to the White House. It is conveniently located near the Farragut North (Red line) and Farragut West (Blue and Orange lines) Metro stations.
