The Octagon House and Museum

The Octagon House and Museum is located in Washington, DC at 18th St and New York Ave, NW and it is the oldest museum in the US dedicated to architecture and design.  The building was designed by Dr. William Thorton (who also designed the U.S. Capitol) and is an example of Federal period architecture. The Octagon House has a place in presidential history where it served as the temporary residence of President Madison after the British burned the White House.

The house had extensive restoration work from 1989 to 1995 and again from 2005-2009. It is open for self-guided audio tours Tuesday-Thursday from 2-4 PM.  The museum is just 15 minutes walking distance from our bed and breakfast Washington DC.

Washington DC Museums

the Hirshhorn museum, Washington DC

Joseph Hirhhorn was a Latvian immigrant, a stockbroker and also had excellent taste in art!

This Washington DC museum  which opened in 1974 began with 4,000 paintings and 2,600 sculptures, which he donated to the Smithsonian in 1966 (world’s largest personal collection of modern art).

The third level has contemporary classics by artists like De Kooning, Man Ray and Warhol, while the second level is reserved for rotating exhibitions (check the website for schedules), and the first floor is reserved for the newest acquisitions.

The other things we love about the Hirshhorn museum are the free guided tours (daily on the hour from 12-4PM) and the art films held in the evenings in the Ring Auditorium.

The Library of Congress

Today our guests went to The Library of Congress which is located in three buildings and they were pleased with the visit!

The site is accessible by the Capitol South station (orange and blue lines) which is two blocks away from the library. Our DC B&B is only at 15 minutes with the metro system.

The Library of Congress which one of the principal missions of the library is to research inquiries made by members of Congress through the Congressional Research Service was built by Congress in 1800. In the early 19 century almost all the original collection of book had been destroyed because od the War of 1812. After this tragic moment in the Washingtonian history, Thomas Jefferson sold his entire personal collection of book (around 6000 books)!

Traveler tip: It is also open to the public, but only members of Congress, supreme Court justices and other members have the right to  check out books… By the way it is the oldest federal cultural institution in the United State and it is the largest library in the world by shelf space and number of books.
