Spend Presidents Day weekend in DC

What better place to spend President’s Day weekend than in Washington DC?

President’s Day, celebrated on February 18th, 2013, originated as a celebration of General George Washington’s birthday, and later evolved to commemorate all of our nation’s great presidential leaders. From parades to exhibits, there’s sure to be excitement in the air, and many festivities around town that weekend in DC.

Visit the Lincoln Memorial (23rd & Constitution Ave., NW) to see the Presidential wreath-laying ceremony and a dramatic reading of the “Gettysburg Address.” Or tour the White House! Or for a more unusual adventure, tour Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum to see likenesses of all US Presidents carved from wax!

While in the region, be sure to check out  Old Town Alexandria, home to Washington’s Birthday parade, and the Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, which typically hosts a George Washington’s Birthnight Banquet and Ball during this time. And on your way home, why not stop by Colonial Williamsburg for a trip back in time?

The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink

Getting in the winter spirit? Enjoy art?  Why not combine the two at The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink? 

There you can view the outdoor sculptures, while ice skating in the open air, at times even to music!

The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink is free and open to the public, and located on the National Mall at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue NW. Monday- Thursday, the Gallery is open 10 a.m.- 9  p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-11 p.m.; and Sunday, 11:00 a.m.- 9:00 p.m.

When you’re finished, come on back the Guest House and warm up with some delicious hot cocoa. Enjoy!

Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday in Washington DC

Looking for a getaway for Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday weekend? Look no further; DC is a natural place to spend your holiday weekend, with so many commemorative events taking place all about the city. What better time to pay a visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in downtown DC?

While you’re here, take in some of the other celebrations of MLK’s life and legacy:

  • On January 19, 2013, the MLK Jr. Parade will begin at Martin Luther King Jr. Ave SE and Milwaukee Place SE at 11 a.m.
  • On the 20th, check out the performance of “Let Freedom Ring,” to be held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
  • The 21st, will hold the opportunity to give back and give tribute, by participating in a Day of Community Service, with various opportunities about the city.

If you’re looking for a place to rest your head during MLK weekend, we still have a couple of spaces left. If you’re traveling to the city, consider letting the American Guest House be your home away from home.

The Smithsonian’s Pure Land Exhibit at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery

Looking for something to do this week in Washington DC? Check out the Smithsonian’s Pure Land Exhibit at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. The exhibit is entitled, “A digital, immersive experience of Cave 220 at Dunhuang, China.” The exhibit runs through December 9, 2012, and admission is free. The Gallery is open from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

APSCU Symposium 2012

The Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities will host a Symposium, “From Politics to Policy” from December 5 to 7, 2012 in Washington DC. The symposium will cover post-election impacts for private sector educational institutions, including issues such as the fiscal cliff, budget sequestration, and its potential impact on educational grants. Keynote speakers include experts from the Georgetown University Center on Education & Workforce, the Department of Labor, and the Washington Examiner.

The NFPO Committee of the Greater Washington Society of CPAs proudly presents the 24th Annual GWSCPA Not-For-Profit Organization Symposium. The Washington Auto Show will be held on February 1-10, 2013 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington DC. New Exhibit at Smithsonian Museum

The Smithsonian Museum is opening a new exhibit, Roads of Arabia. For those of you passionate about history, this is an exhibit that you cannot miss. The artifacts at display come from a variety of civilizations that lived in the Arabian peninsula. The exhibition will be on display until February 2013.
