The 8th Annual Downtown DC Holiday Market will be held this year from from November 30th through December 23rd on F Street, NW between 7th & 9th Streets across from the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The market is modeled after village markets and is full of holiday cheer. At the market you can find holiday arts and crafts such as pottery, jewelry, paintings, and even textiles. There is a daily rotation of 60 exhibitors from a pool of over 175 regional artisans, so be sure to visit more than one day in order to not miss out on a unique treasure. You’ll be sure to find something for everyone on your shopping list.

Veterans Day Special

The American Guest House a military lodging in Washington DC  will honor veterans as well as their spouses and families by offering one free room to a Vet (and their guest) on Sunday, November 11, 2012 in order to show our appreciation to those who’ve put their lives on the line to protect our country. In recent years, over 900 inns and B&Bs in North America have joined in solidarity to honor Vets this way. Our offer is for both active or retired Vets.

Veterans Day is a great time to visit the monuments and memorials in Washington, DC. Many of the memorials and a few other attractions around the region host  Veteran’s Day events in DC in honor of America’s veterans. The main event in DC is the observance at Arlington National Cemetery, which hosts the national Veterans day service with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Seating is limited, so make sure to arrive at least a thirty minutes early.

Taste Adams Morgan

The American Guest House, our charming Washington, DC accommodation, is located just steps away from one of Washington D.C.’s most historic and lively neighborhood’s, Adams Morgan, which is hosting its 34th Annual Adams Morgan Day Festival this Sunday, September 9, 2012 from noon to 7pm. The festival boasts to be one of the longest continuously-running neighborhood festivals in D.C. All along the 18th Street corridor (between Columbia Road and Florida Avenue) you will find a vibrant multicultural street celebration with live music, local food, crafts booths, and local merchants. Additionally, opening at 10 a.m. is a special area featuring the work of local artists, which is just off 18th on Belmont Street. Make sure to come out and enjoy a unique D.C. treat!

Smithsonian Hands-On Forensic Anthropology Lab

Fan of the infamous TV show Bones? If so, make sure you include the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History’s hands-on forensic anthropology lab as part of your list of things to do in the city. It is the only interactive exhibit in the world that allows visitors to touch and examine real human bones. This is a fascinating combination of anthropology, history, and anatomy all in one! The summer hours are Monday-Friday (closed Wednesday) from 11 am – 5 pm, and Saturday-Sunday from 11 am – 4 pm. The exhibit is located on the National Mall, just two miles from one of the best and most accommodating Washington DC Weekend Getaways.
