Old Town Theater – Alexandria, VA

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company

The Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company was founded in Washington, DC in 1980. Woolly has been known for it’s innovative plays. The theater company has taken on the role of “Research and Development” for theater. The Woolly Mammoth Theater Company has shown more experimental plays, and many of them have gone on to over 200 theaters internationally.

Ticket prices vary for each show. However they do offer “pay what you can tickets” on some Monday’s and Wednesday’s, as well as $15 “stampede seats”. Individuals under the age of 25 pay $15 for all performances. Valid ID is required. Please visit  the website for additional ticket information, and for a list of current performances .

The Wooly Mammoth Theater Company is accessible by the Archives-Navy Memorial/Penn Quarter metro station serviced by the yellow and green lines. The theater is also accessible by the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro station serviced by the red, yellow and green line.

American Ballet Theatre: The Nutcracker

We may not be ready to hear this yet, but the Holiday season is upon us. If visiting Washington, DC during the Holiday months, and intend to attend some of the season shows you may want to plan ahead and purchase tickets now.

The American Ballet Theatre will be featuring the NutCracker at the Kennedy Center’s Opera house from December 8th-11th. Tickets for this show sell out quickly. Prices range from $45-$150, and may be purchased on the Kennedy Center’s website. Please visit Kennedy Center’s website for additional information on this show and other shows being featured. The Kennedy Center is accessible by the the Foggy Bottom metro station, serviced by the blue and orange lines. The Kennedy Center offers a free shuttle service that runs in 15 minute increments just steps away from the metro station’s entrance.

E street Theatre

Voted “Best Place to Watch a Movie” by the Washington Post Express, this theater hosts many independent, foreign, indie, classic revival, documentary-style and your-not-so-average-blockbuster films.  People go over there without even checking what the theater is  showing, and leave it to chance!  You can tell they’re very purposeful in their selections, and the theater is small enough to feel very personal.

Their movie line up continues to be an array of interesting and dynamic films from across the globe. Not only that, but it’s easily accessed by the Metro Center metro stop right in the heart of the city.

The atmosphere is pleasant and they serve a variety of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, regular movie treats  like popcorn which is amazing and some other goodies. So, if you’re in the mood for something a little unusual, see what they have playing! You can also join their Film Club to get access to free showings, upcoming engagements and filmmaker appearances.

If you have a student ID, take advantage of their student discount. Also, films before 6pm on weekdays and the first showing of each screen on weekends is a discounted $8, even cheaper than the student discount!

Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center, Washington DC

Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center holds free performances daily at 6pm. The millennium stage is located adjacent to the Opera House. The Kennedy Center holds some of Washington, DC’s most important musical performances and plays. Take advantage of the opportunity to attend one of these culturally diverse performances. The performances are held outdoors during the Summer months, weather permitting.

The Kennedy Center is perched above the Potomac river. It is 15 minutes walking distances to  the Washington Harbour. There are a variety of restaurants to choose from on the water front, should you choose to make an evening out of your visit. The number 80 metro bus stops at the Kennedy Center. However the Kennedy Center is also accessible via metro rail. The Foggy Bottom Metro Station is serviced by the Kennedy Center’s free Shuttle every 15 minutes, which will leave you at one of the main entrances. “A New America Art Festival”, Washington DC

The H Street corridor is an up and coming neighborhood in DC. New restaurants  have been consistently popping up throughout the corridor. The Atlas Performing Arts Center is the center of culture and arts in the community. The Center hosts multi-cultural dance classes and programs that cater to all demographics as well as hosting performances alongside it’s sister venue, The H Street Play House.

Over the next several weeks the Atlas performing arts center will be holding a festival, “Intersections: A New America Art’s Festival“. The festival will run from February 25th through March 13th. The performances will consist of an array of genre’s  of diverse cultural relevence. The Cafe Concerts are free and include Flamenco dancing, Nigerian percussion, swing dancing and more. There will also be workshops and art exhibitions. There is a shuttle that runs from the Gallery Place metro stop that will take you to the theater for your convenience.

A Conversation and Performance Featuring Ntozake Shange and Ifa Bayesa

Authors Ntozake Shange (for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf) and her sister Ifa Bayesa (The Ballad of Emmett Till) read from their new novel Some Sing, Some Cry. Set against such seismic events in American history as post-Civil War Reconstruction and two world wars, the book follows the Mayfield family as they migrate from a rice plantation off the coast of South Carolina to Charleston and cities beyond. The evening also includes a performance by vocalists and a string ensemble of original compositions by Ifa Bayesa.

Lost Charlie Chaplin films to be shown at Slapsticon in Arlington!

Slapsticon is a film festival that strives to bring life back to some of the old? silent comedies that paved the way for all our future films! On July 17th, their? special feature will include? three lost films created by one of the most prominent film pioneers of the 20th century, Sir Charles Chaplin. This is a real treat for any Chaplin fan! The films start at 8pm and include A Thief Catcher (1914), Mutual Outtakes (1916-17), and The Bond (1918).

This festival also includes many other film shorts? by other great comedians? including Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle,? Hal Roach, ? Harpo Marx, and Abbot & Costello. The festival runs between July 15-18 and is located at the Rosslyn Spectrum Theatre in Arlington, Virginia. The film program runs all day. See the link for details on the films to be shown.

To join, you must Register? beforehand. This is a festival? that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and is a great way to get out of the July heat! So, be sure not to miss out on the laughs. As the great Chaplin once said, “a day without laughter is a day wasted.”
