Capitol Bikeshare, Washington DC

Over the weekend, I tried for the first time Capital Bikeshare which is a bicycle sharing system that serves Washington DC and Arlington County, Virginia… Let me tell you that I’m a FAN!  You need a bike to run an errand, grab a bite, get to work or school or even visit the city, this is the best solution ever!

The system is the largest bike sharing service in the United States with over 1,100 bicycles at 114 stations.

Capital Bikeshare has different membership options. Casual riders may purchase a 24-hour membership for US$5 or a 5-day membership for US$15 by using a credit card at the kiosk of any bike station. Riders may also sign up for a monthly or annual membership online for US$25 and US$75, respectively. Monthly and annual members receive an individual key in the mail, which is used to unlock any bike at the station, bypassing the kiosk.

And hold on to be more awesome the first 30 minutes of each ride are free! The billing system keeps track of the usage time from when the bike is checked out until it is docked at any other station.

Enjoy your ride:)  Jonathan

Rental Bikes in Washington DC

For the environmentally conscious and exercise prone, bike rentals are available throughout the city by different means. DC does have the largest bike share program through Capital Bikeshare. There is a membership fee depending on how often you would like to use the bike and then usage fee for the amount of time. See their prices for more info. Other places to rent bikes includes: Bike and Roll? and Big Wheel Bikes.

For trail info, take a gander at this website.

If you’re by the Smithsonian museums, you can also pick up a ride from? the pedal-powered taxi service, DC Pedicab. It’s not quite a horse-drawn carriage, but it certainly provides the rider with a new experience!

Happy travels! -Vanessa
