Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday in Washington DC

Looking for a getaway for Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday weekend? Look no further; DC is a natural place to spend your holiday weekend, with so many commemorative events taking place all about the city. What better time to pay a visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in downtown DC?

While you’re here, take in some of the other celebrations of MLK’s life and legacy:

  • On January 19, 2013, the MLK Jr. Parade will begin at Martin Luther King Jr. Ave SE and Milwaukee Place SE at 11 a.m.
  • On the 20th, check out the performance of “Let Freedom Ring,” to be held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
  • The 21st, will hold the opportunity to give back and give tribute, by participating in a Day of Community Service, with various opportunities about the city.

If you’re looking for a place to rest your head during MLK weekend, we still have a couple of spaces left. If you’re traveling to the city, consider letting the American Guest House be your home away from home.

Dom Pedro Aquamarine at Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

For many years the Hope Diamond has been the star of the Smithsonian
National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, but now it’s light is not shining as bright since it begun sharing the spot light with Dom Pedro Aquamarine, the largest single piece of cut-gem aquamarine in the world.  This magnificent gem was mined in Brazil in the late 1980s and named after its first two Brazilian emperors, Dom Pedro Primeiro and his son, Dom Pedro Segundo.
