Low-cost luxury transportation to DC from New York and Philly isn’t too good to be true!

If you want to take a trip from DC to New York City or Philadelphia (or vice versa), but don’t want to spend what it costs to fly or take the train, there are some pretty luxurious alternatives out there. Megabus, Bolt Bus, and DC2NY offer upscale vehicles which are equipped with free WiFi, electrical outlets and clean bathrooms. DC2NY offers one-way tickets for $30 and round-trip tickets for $60.00. Both Megabus and Bolt Bus price their tickets on a sliding scale, so that tickets booked in advance are as little as $2 one-way for the first few to book their seats for a particular trip. After that their prices scale up the fuller the bus gets. On average you’ll pay under $20 for a one-way or under $40 for a round-trip ticket with these two luxury lines. Additionally, a few of these lines even offer buses to Boston for reasonable prices.

For an economy traveler on an economy budget there are a few other bus lines that aren’t quite as luxurious, but still very reliable.

Megabus and Bolt bus depart from Union Station, which is on the Red Metro Line. Conveniently, our lodging  is located in Dupont Circle, which is also on the Red Metro Line just a few stops down from Union Station. The DC2NY bus departs from Dupont Circle, just a few minutes from our front door. So when planning your Washington, DC trip itinerary, consider us as your best location to stay in Washington DC.

What’s a SmartTrip Card, where do I get one, and how do I use it?

If you plan to use the Metrorail or Metrobus system during your stay in Washington, DC, then you probably want to purchase a SmartTrip Card. Essentially, this rechargeable plastic card offers you a lower fare than the traditional paper cards. Each time you use it, you’ll save a dollar on Metrorail and $.20 on Metrobus. Additionally, it’s faster and easier to use, because all you have to do is touch it to the receptor. In other words, you won’t be stuck fumbling with exact change on the bus. If you plan to transfer buses or between the Metrorail and Metrobus, the most cost-effective way to do this is with a SmartTrip card. Without it, you have to pay full price for each transfer.

According to WMATA’s website, SmarTrip cards can be purchased “online, by mail, at a select number of CVS/pharmacy and Giant Food stores or at any of 200 Metro sales locations: Metro Sales Offices, the Northern Metrobus Division, vending machines at Metrorail stations that have parking facilities, and regional transit stores.”

To make things even easier for you conveniently located Dupont Circle bed and breakfast stocks SmartTrip cards for guests to use during their stay.

The Gaylord National Hotel

The Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center is one of the largest hotel and convention center of the North East Coast located in National Harbor, Maryland and owned by Gaylord Hotels, a division of Gaylord Entertainment Company.

The hotel is situated along the shores of the Potomac River, downriver from Washington, DC, and across the river from Alexandria, Virginia which is about 12 miles from our Washington DC B&B.

For many of our guests who attend conferences or events at the Gaylord National, the easiest and the fastest way to go over there will be to take a cab from our DC Guest House. It will take you approximately30 minutes and will cost you around $35/one way.

You can also ride the metro but it will take you an hour and half to get to the Gaylord National Hotel: you will need to go to U street metro station and then take the green line towards Branch Ave. From there you will need to get a cab. Overall it will cost you around $15.

Rental cars in Washington DC

A rental car is a good transportation option if you want to visit the Washington metropolitan  area.  Renting a car in Washington DC is not difficult, in fact, car rental agencies have many competitive rates and offers that can make it hard to decide which company to go with.  We recommend looking for special rates and reserving online. We always suggest to pick up/rent cars at Union Station (only 10 to 15 minutes from our Washington DC Accommodations Hotel) and  Reagan Airport. Why? Because you have  a lot more choices of rental car  companies, it’s cheaper (especially at Reagan airport) and because it’s “outside” downtown DC which if you want to avoid rush hours, traffic, it’s something to consider!

Make sure you are aware of hidden fees, age restrictions, and discounts before reserving a car. You don’t want to go to the car rental counter unprepared because you might end up leaving with a higher rental rate than necessary. Check your own car insurance first to see what they cover and also think about prepaying for gas: if you return the car half empty, you will have still prepaid for a full tank of gas. Opt for filling up the gas tank before returning the car, and last tip for the end; if you would like a nicer car for the same rate of the initial car you reserved, it’s always worth to ask for it! If there are plenty of cars available at the time, you might just get your wish :-)
