DC’s National Museum of Natural History

The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is DC’s most visited Smithsonian museum, as it provides exceptional research, displays, and exhibits on the Earth’s natural history. The museum is open everyday and is located in the National Mall, near our Washington DC bed and breakfast.

The museum must-sees include, the Hope Diamond, Dom Pedro Aquamarine, Mummified cat, African Elephant, Live Coral Reef, and the Neanderthal (reconstruction). The museum’s exhibitions are divided by category into halls including, Hall of Geology, Gems, and Minerals, Hall of Human Origins, Dinosaurs/Hall of Paleobiology, Hall of Mammals, Insect Zoon, Ocean Hall, African Voices, Butterflies & Plants, Western Cultures Hall, Korea Gallery, and Hall of Bones.

Additionally, they have new, exciting exhibits that are temporarily on display. Some of the new exhibits currently on display are: Color In A New Light, Birds of D.C., Life in One Cubic Foot, Urban Bird Habitat, and much more. At the National Museum of Natural History you will discover and learn about the evolution of Earth, its origins, and Earth as we know it today by looking at research and artifacts that span over thousands of years.

At the National Museum of Natural History, there are many special events and activities happening everyday. One of the largest IMAX screens in the world is right here in DC at the museum for you to enjoy! Dinosaurs Alive! (3D), National Parks (3D) and Secret Ocean (3D) are some of the films that are currently scheduled. Tickets are required to attend and can be purchased on their website. After the film, stop by the Butterfly Pavilion and take a stroll among live butterflies for an opportunity to see a variety of living butterflies from all around the world.

If you live in DC or just traveling here for a few days, stop by The National Museum of Natural History at 10th St. and Constitution Ave. NW. It is open everyday of the year (except Christmas Day) from 10 AM to 5:30 PM. Admission is free.
