This year’s annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association takes place August 28th – 31st at the Marriott Wardman Park, just northeast of our D.C. Inn. This year’s meeting will focus on how emerging digital technology over the past couple of decades has rapidly altered political relations and have caused relatively novel problems. For example, recent cases in the Supreme Court have shown how novel legal problems have arisen due to the availability of information via text messages and other digitally conveyed information.
Are the police able to search the text message information of those involved in criminal investigations without a warrant? The court ruled unanimously that they are not, but only after the practice had been taken up by a few different law enforcement agencies. Additionally, inroad into surveillance technology have made it more likely that we will begin seeing issues with privacy rights become more and more salient, as Edward Snowden’s release of a cache of secret documents has made clear. This conference will address these and other topics that have gained prominence in contemporary political discourse. We hope attendees choose us while searching for D.C. accommodation.
