On December 6th at 4:30 p.m., the Christmas season officially begins in Washington DC with the lighting of the National Christmas tree.   During the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, nationally known entertainers such as, the Avett Brothers
Joshua Bell, Renée Fleming, Forte, Aretha Franklin, Janelle Monae, Prince Royce,
Arturo Sandoval and the Military Band.  More artists will be added to the list still.  President Obama will bring a message of peace to the nation and the world and the First Family of course will be present too.  If you were not lucky enough to win a free ticket to the event, the next best option is to watch it via live stream TV .

This tradition of lighting a national Christmas tree begun in 1923.  In 1954, a “Pathway of Peace,” 56 smaller, decorated trees representing all 50 states, five territories, and the District of Columbia were planted surrounding the National Christmas Tree.  In 1978, a live 40-foot Colorado blue spruce was transplanted from York, Pennsylvania to its present site on the Ellipse, the grassy area south of the White House. The Christmas Pageant of Peace has expanded over the years and has evolved into a major annual event that includes the tree lighting, live musical performances and an appearance by the first family.

One of a kind ornaments are made by ordinary Americans to hang on 56 trees – one for every U.S. state, territory and the District of Columbia – that surround the National Christmas Tree.

This is the start of three weeks of celebration in holiday music in the nation’s capital.  Along with musical groups from Washington D.C., and across the country, there will be holiday entertainment to the countless visitors for a one of a kind holiday experience set against the backdrop of the National Christmas Tree.

Our Washington DC Inn is ready and available to accommodate holiday season guests and we are offering a flat rate of $150 + tax per night.

Santa’s Workshop will be open again this year.   Families are invited to visit Santa and his elves as they make toys for all the good little girls and boys. The Santa’s Workshop will be open from Monday, December 9 – Tuesday, December 24.
