natlo

The National Low Income Housing Coalition will hold its 2013 Housing Policy Conference from March 17 to March 20, 2013 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.  As Members of Congress work to reach a compromise  to avoid the “fiscal cliff”, the NLIHC is undertaking the task of preparing advocates, providers, and residents to meet the foreseeable challenges and opportunities.

Those in attendance will have the option to engage with policy experts through plenary sessions and workshops.  In addition, tables with housing and advocacy information will be available.  Each participant will receive a copy of NLIHC’s 2013 Advocate’s Guide to Housing and Community Development policy handbook and a Congressional Directory of the 113th Congress.  Confirmed speakers for the 2013 Housing Policy conference include: Melissa Harris-Perry of MSNBC, Congressman Keith Ellison, and director Chad Freidrich.

If you are making plans to attend NLIHC’s 2013 Housing Policy Conference, please consider staying at our lovely Washington DC lodging accommodation located in the DuPont Circle neighborhood.  Our location is within a 15 minute walk of the Omni Shoreham Hotel or, if you prefer, you can take a quick bus ride to the conference.

The National Museum of Health and Medicine

NMHM

Washington D.C. has no shortage of museums.  However, you’d have a hard time answering the following question, “Excuse me, do you know where the National Museum of Health and Medicine is located?”  Perhaps the museum’s location, 2500 Linden Lane, Silver Spring, MD 20910, makes it difficult for tourist to locate it.

Established during the Civil War, the National Museum of Health and Medicine serves as a  repository for specimens used in military research to better understand the human body.  After World War II, researchers at the museum began working on understanding human pathology.

With it’s countless specimens, the museum is a perfect place to relive childhood dreams of becoming a doctor.  You’ll have the opportunity to view dissected brains, hearts, lungs, and even primitive surgical tools.  For children, the museum provides unlimited opportunities for intellectual stimulation, thanks to its knowledgeable staff and interactive kiosks.

The museum is open 7 days a week, from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm and accessible by the Metro Redline.  For more information, please visit the National Museum of Health and Medicine’s travel page, here.

Don’t forget the view the Lincoln exhibit!

Theodore Roosevelt Memorial

This past weekend I visited for the first time (after 5 being a DC resident for 5 years) the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial located on a tiny island on the Potomac river. Let me tell you, what an amazing experience it was! This place is a living memorial, with  a “real forest” designed to mimic the natural forest that once covered the island, miles of trails through wooded uplands and swampy bottom lands…
By the way, did you know that the term “teddy bear” was brought on by a toy makers labeling of the stuffed animals after a generous act of Theodore Roosevelt sparing a bears life during a sporting event?  Ever since millions of children have come to enjoy the animals as a bedtime comfort naming their furry friends, though nothing beats a good old “Teddy” bear to show just how great this president was.

Airport Transportation

Traveling from Baltimore-Washington International Airport or Dulles Airport? Use Super Shuttle Van!

The Washington Metropolitan area is serviced by three major airports: Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA), Dulles International Airport (IAD), and the Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI). Because of its proximity and access to the Blue and Yellow Metro Rail lines, many of our guests traveling from the Ronald Reagan National Airport can easily get to our bed and breakfast in Washington DC with relative ease.

Our guest traveling from Baltimore-Washington International Airport or Dulles Airport, however, have fewer modes of transportation to Washington DC. But not to worry, Super Shuttle is the most convenient way to travel from BWI or IAD, especially night arrivals. Simply go online and reserve a seat. Your shuttle will be waiting for you at the airport to drop you off at our bed and breakfast. Fares from Baltimore-Washington International Aiport and Dulles Airport are $37 and $29, respectively. For each additional passengers, the rate is $10.

Safe and fun travels.
