Washington DC Restaurants

Looking for late night restaurants in Dupont Circle?

From time to time guests arrive late in the evening at the American Guest House, our charming accommodation in Washington DC. Often they have just flown in from somewhere far away and are quite hungry. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of late night restaurants in Dupont Circle, but there is one great spot that’s close to our lovely inn in DC and that’s the Kramerbooks Afterwords Cafe. They are open until from 7am until 1am daily. Not only does their tasty dinner menu run until 12:45, their bar is hopping with orders for coffee and cocktails until close. They have outdoor seating as well as an indoor dining area, which is separate from the bookstore and cafe/bar.

If you’re arriving to town late, you should definitely consider us when you’re deciding where to stay when visiting Washington DC, so we can treat you to a stellar DC breakfast after Kramerbooks Afterwords Cafe takes care of your late night nibble needs.

Rosh Hashanah in Washington, DC

The festival of Rosh Hashanah, which translates to “Head of the Year,” is just around the corner. It is observed for two days starting on the first day of the Jewish year, which is Monday, September 17th this year. The celebration is in honor of the creation of Adam and Eve, and with them, mankind. The central observance of Rosh Hashanah is the sounding of the shofar, the ram’s horn. For those who observe Rosh Hashanah, this represents the trumpet blast of the coronation of a king, as well as a call to repentance.

Other observances include: eating a piece of apple dipped in honey, which symbolizes a desire for a sweet year, blessing one another, reciting a special prayer said near a body of water, said to cast away “sins into the depths of the sea,” and after candle lighting and prayers there is the blessing of the challah, a tasty braided loaf of bread.

It just so happens that our Washington dc lodging near metro has an Innkeeper that learned how to make  one heck of a challah loaf a few years ago when she was invited to celebrate Rosh Hashaha with friends. If you’re coming to DC to celebrate Rosh Hashanah with family or friends, staying with us  at our  Washington DC Bed and Breakfast near Dupont Circle ensures you another shot at some yummy challah and the secret recipe if you’re lucky.

Free Things in Washington DC Washington DC Activities Washington DC Music

DC Music Scene

A lot of people believe that all we do in DC is politics, but that’s not accurate at all. The District loves its films, food, festivals, and music. In fact, this week (and in some cases, every week) for live music you have your choice between THE BOSS (a.k.a. Bruce Springsteen), original members of Bob Marley’s The Wailers, the Latin American Harp Festival, the Columbia Stations Jazz Session (which is just up the street from our lovely Washington DC Lodging), the Washington Concert Opera, and many more. This city’s free or inexpensive entertainment doesn’t stop at the Smithsonian museums. There are tons of free or cheap venues around town to catch live indie rock or outdoor jazz. Honestly, it wouldn’t be surprising to accidentally stumble across such a venue in DC, since they’re all over town.  In keeping up with loads of free things to do in this great Nation’s Capital, this historical Washington DC Hotel also offer free delicious gourmet breakfast, cookies, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, city maps, luggage storage, and more.
