The Octagon House and Museum

The Octagon House and Museum is located in Washington, DC at 18th St and New York Ave, NW and it is the oldest museum in the US dedicated to architecture and design.  The building was designed by Dr. William Thorton (who also designed the U.S. Capitol) and is an example of Federal period architecture. The Octagon House has a place in presidential history where it served as the temporary residence of President Madison after the British burned the White House.

The house had extensive restoration work from 1989 to 1995 and again from 2005-2009. It is open for self-guided audio tours Tuesday-Thursday from 2-4 PM.  The museum is just 15 minutes walking distance from our bed and breakfast Washington DC.

The Anderson House

The Anderson House was once the home of Lars Anderson III, a diplomat from a wealthy family in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The mansion is located in the heart of Dupont Circle, Washington DC, 10 minutes away from our Washington DC accommodations, where the Anderson family held inaugural balls and celebrations throughout Washington’s social season. The goal of Washington’s elite at that time was to make the nation’s capital a stylish and modern city with a great senses of patriotism, and the Anderson played a major role in that movement.

The home is now headquarters of the Cincinnati Society which has the mission to preserve the history of and honor the veterans of the Revolutionary War.

The Anderson House is open and free to the public for public tours Tuesday through Saturday from 1pm-4pm. The mansion is closed, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day, as well as selects times of year for Society meetings.
