President Obama And First Lady Host The 2012 Governors’ Dinner At The White House

While Hollywood celebrates the Academy Awards, a different gala event was on at the White House yesterday night: President Obama hosted the nation’s state governors.

The states’ top executives were in town for the yearly National Governors Association weekend, a four-day conference where the leaders meet with federal officials and business executives different kind of topics such as issues facing the states.

The president thanked  his guests for their leadership but kept his remarks brief, telling them tonight was about having some fun and enjoy the night…

Washington DC Art Galleries

The Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery

The Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery contain some of the most important holdings of Asian art in the world. The Sackler Gallery is host to contemporary art from Asia as well as international loan exhibitions.  The Freer and Sackler Galleries are open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day except December 25.

The galleries are located on the National Mall, the grassy area between the Capitol and the Washington Monument, steps from the Smithsonian Metro stop. The Sackler Gallery is located at 1050 Independence Avenue, SW. The Freer Gallery of Art is located at Jefferson Drive at 12th Street, SW. The two museums are connected by an underground exhibition space. Handicap accessible entrance to the Freer Gallery is located on Independence Avenue at 12th Street, SW.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture

The Smithsonian Institution officially began construction Wednesday on a new museum dedicated to African-American culture and heritage! The Smithsonian’s 19th museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture will be located on the National Mall  and will open in 2015.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture will be a place that transcends the boundaries of race and culture that divide the Americans and where all Americans can learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience.

Until the opening, the Smithsonian invite you to visit the African-American gallery located on the second floor of the National Museum of American History.

The Folger Shakespeare Library

The Folger Shakespeare Library was established in 1932 by Emily Jordan Folger and Henry Clay Folger.  It contains the largest and most distinguished collection of Shakespeare literature in the world, originating with the personal collection of the Folger’s. The Folger is a world renowned research center on Shakespeare and the early modern age in the Western Hemisphere.

Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and the Library is closed on all Federal holidays. The Folger is also open for special ticketed performances and programs on select evening and Sundays. Admission to the library is free. There is also a reading room for “registered readers”. The Folger is located on Capitol Hill. The closest metro station is the Capitol South metro station on the Blue and Orange lines. Please visit metro’s website for additional information.
