Labor Day Concert at the US Capitol

Once again the West Lawn of the US Capitol serves as the choice venue for musical celebration for a national holiday. The National Symphony Orchestra will be featured at the Labor Day Concert on September 4th at 8PM. Admission to the event is free. Gates open at 5pm, but an earlier arrival is highly suggested as most will be in line early to secure a good seat on the lawn. The event will be moved to the Kennedy Center Concert Hall should there be inclement weather.

The US Capitol is accessible by the Capitol South metro station, serviced by the blue and orange lines. Should the event be moved to the Kennedy Center due to inclement weather, the Kennedy Center is accessible by the Foggy Bottom metro station also accessible by the blue and orange lines. The Kennedy Center  shuttle provides service to and from the Kennedy Center and Foggy Bottom metro station. Alternatively, should you decide to walk, the center is a 10 minutes away.  Please visit metro’s website for additional travel information and real time status updates.

The National Cathedral

The National Cathedral is open to people of all faiths to come and worship. The Cathedral’s construction began in 1907.  The first stone laid was brought from a field in Bethlehem. It has been a point of unity in our nation’s time of difficulty and mourning.  The Cathedral’s architecture is stunning. The stained glass windows, and highlights such as the moon stone make it a site worth seeing.

The National Cathedral is open to the public Monday – Sunday with hours as follows: Monday – Friday 10am – 5:30pm, Saturday 10am-4:30pm, Sunday 10am -4pm. The suggested donation for admission to the cathedral is $5 per person. Tours are given at 30 minute intervals at fixed times seven days a week. Please visit the website for additional information.

The cathedral is accessible by the N2, N3, N4, N6 and 96 metro bus routes all servicing the Dupont/Kalorama neighborhoods. Please visit wmata for additional travel information.

Check out their list of other figures on display here. Hours: Open all year, Monday to Thursday from 10am to 4pm and Friday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

Admission: Adults are $20.00, kids are $15.00 and seniors are $18.00. Discounts also apply to those who qualify.

The National Museum of Crime & Punishment

The National Museum of Crime & Punishment is a museum dedicated to the history of criminology and penology in America. It is located in the Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington, DC, near  the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station. Opened 3 years ago, the museum has more than 700 artifacts in 28,000 square feet of exhibition space relate the history of crime and the consequences of crime in America and in American popular culture. You will discover exhibits  on colonial crime, pirates, Wild West outlaws, gangsters, the Mob and many more… Twenty-eight interactive stations include the high-speed police chase simulators used in the training of law enforcement officers, and a Firearms Training Simulator.

Adding ice on the cake, you will be guided through the process of solving a crime through forensic science techniques, including ballistics, blood analysis, finger and foot printing, and dental and facial reconstruction!!  Pretty amazing, no!!

This museum is 0.4 miles from the guest house, closest metro station is Gallery place Chinatown.

The Daughters of American Revolution Museum

The Daughters of American Revolution Museum features exhibitions of furniture and other decorative art from the pre-industrial American era. The musueum is comprised of two galleries containing both permanent and changing exhibitions. DAR museum also provides on site tours of  their “period rooms”.

The DAR museum is open for operation from 9:30am – 4pm Monday-Thursday, Saturdays from 9am-5pm and closed on Sundays. Please visit the website for schedules of tours and special exhibits. Admission to the musueum is free.

The museum is accessible by the blue line. The museum is a 10 minute walk from the Farragut West Metro station. You would exit the metro on 17th Street NW and walk South to D Street NW.
