Washington DC Independence Day Weekend

The Nation’s Capital is the best place to Celebrate America’s birthday! There will be a plethora of events taking place to choose from. Though you may choose to stay centrally located by the tidal basin, where you may enjoy the sounds of concerts and a great view of the fire works along the National Mall. Please use the suggestions below as your guide to events that weekend.

The Gaylord National Hotel will be holding their annual National July 3rd festival on the National Harbor. There will be live music, food concession stands, activities for adults and children and the grand finale will be the fireworks on the National Harbor. Tickets are required for this event. The Harbor is serviced by metro bus and metro rail’s green line.

Washington, DC’s Independence Day Parade will take place on Constitution Avenue Between 7th and 17th Streets, NW. The parade will begin at 11:45am. Be sure to arrive early to ensure a good view. Metro open’s it’s doors at 7am. The parade is accessible by the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro station as well as the Archives metro station serviced by the yellow and green lines.

Should you attend the parade, the National Archives  is located in proximity to the parade’s starting point. The Archives will be showing special family programming about the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The Capitol Fourth Concert will be taking place on the Capitol’s West Lawn. The National Symphony Orchestra will be performing along with some pop artists. The Capitol is accessible by the Capitol South metro station, serviced by the blue and orange lines. This concert is free and open to the public. No tickets necessary, however early arrival is suggested. Admittance will begin at 3pm.

The Fourth of July Fireworks on the National Mall is the highlight of the weekend’s festivities. The fireworks usually begin at dark, about 9:15. Tourists and Washingtonians alike camp on the mall all day to witness this event. If you plan on visiting the mall this day, you may as well visit the Concert on the Washington Monument grounds starting at 6pm. The National Mall is accessible by the Federal Triangle and Smithsonian metro stations serviced by the blue and orange lines. The L’enfant Plaza metro station is  just a short walk to the National Mall, and is serviced by the yellow and green lines.
