Alexandria by Water Seaport Cruise

The marina and waterfront of Old Town Alexandria is home to the imposing Torpedo Factory, now a prominent regional arts center and gallery for local artists. The Alexandria by Water Seaport Cruise will guide you along the lawns and gardens of Founders Park, the Old Town Yacht Basin, Admiral’s Row, and the  Jones Point Lighthouse as well as other sites.

This tour is given on  weekends only from early April through the middle of June, on an hourly basis. During peak season, tours are given Tuesday through Sunday, also on an hourly basis. The prices for tours are $12 for adults and $6 for children. Please visit the website for additional information.  The Seaport is accessible by the King Street metro on the blue and yellow lines and the King Street Trolley that departs from the metro every 20 minutes.

C&O Canal Boat Rides in Georgetown

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, more commonly known as the C&O Canal was built as a means of boat transport for Georgetown which was once a tobacco port until the middle of the 19th century.  The Canal is currently a tourist attraction. One hour boat tours are given through the historic neigborhood by guides in period clothing on a boat pulled by donkeys along the canal.

Boat rides are available from April 1st through August 15th, 2011. Boat rides are given five days a week,  Wednesday through Sunday. The rates are as follows: $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $5 for children. Groups of ten or more should contact the Georgetown Visitor Center prior to their visit. Tickets are otherwise sold on a first come first served basis. Please visit the website for additional information.

Georgetown  is not serviced by metro trains, however, there are shuttles that leave from Dupont Circle. Foggy Bottom metro station is the closest to the Georgetown Visitor’s Center. It is a short ten minute walk away. Please visit metro for additional information.

The National Archives in Washington DC

The National Archives Experience contains the original Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. These important historical documents are housed in the Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom, the Public Vaults permanent exhibit gallery, the Lawrence F. O’Brien temporary exhibit gallery,  the Boeing Learning Center, and the William G. McGowan Theater. Spring through late summer is peak tourism season in DC, and masses flock to see the Charters of Freedom while they are visiting the Nation’s Capital.

The National Archives are open seven days a week except Thanksgiving and December 25th. The archives are open from 10am to 7pm daily during  Spring and Summer. Reserved passes are not required for free admission, but it may be a good idea to reserve passes if you are visiting during Washington, DC’s peak season. Guided tours are also available.

The National Archives are accessible by the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro station serviced by the red line. The Archives are less than a 10 minute walk from the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro station and about 25 minutes walking distance from our DC Inn.

Public transport to Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Washington DC

Metrobus 5A is an express bus operating between Dulles International Airport and L’Enfant Plaza Metro station (yellow line) in Washington DC. It is the cheapest option ($3.50) for traveling in/out of Dulles International Airport  in Washington DC.

Metrobus 5A leaves Dulles International Airport every 40 to 60 minutes from 5:50 am to 11:40 pm on weekdays, and hourly from 6:32 am to 11:40 pm on weekends.

The bus trip from Dulles International Airport to L’Enfant Plaza metro station takes about 45 minutes (It can take longer during rush hour).

From Dulles International Airport (IAD)

At the airport, the bus stop is located at the Ground Transportation Curb (taxicab level, down the ramp) at the curb 2E location. Look for the red, white, and blue metrobus sign (5A).

On its way to Washington DC, Metrobus 5A stops at the Rosslyn metro station (blue line). The next bus stop is at L’Enfant Plaza metro station, which is only a block or two from the museums and monuments at the National Mall.

To Dulles International Airport (IAD)

To get to the airport, take Metrobus 5A from either L’Enfant Plaza metro station or Rosslyn metro station.

From Rosslyn Metro Station: the bus stop is located outside the metro station at Moore Street. You will see five bus stops labeled A, B, C, D, E. Wait for Metrobus 5A at bus stop “A”.

From L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station: Wait for Metrobus 5A at bus stop “P”. Bus stop “P” is towards the east exit of the metro station heading up D Street towards 7th Street. Do not stay at the bus stop closest to the metro station because this stop is used for dropping off passengers returning to Washington DC from the airport.

Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center, Washington DC

Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center holds free performances daily at 6pm. The millennium stage is located adjacent to the Opera House. The Kennedy Center holds some of Washington, DC’s most important musical performances and plays. Take advantage of the opportunity to attend one of these culturally diverse performances. The performances are held outdoors during the Summer months, weather permitting.

The Kennedy Center is perched above the Potomac river. It is 15 minutes walking distances to  the Washington Harbour. There are a variety of restaurants to choose from on the water front, should you choose to make an evening out of your visit. The number 80 metro bus stops at the Kennedy Center. However the Kennedy Center is also accessible via metro rail. The Foggy Bottom Metro Station is serviced by the Kennedy Center’s free Shuttle every 15 minutes, which will leave you at one of the main entrances.
