The Washington Monument, Washington DC

The Washington Monument which is shaped like an Egyptian obelisk was finished on December 6, 1884. It is the most prominent structure (555 feet) in Washington, D.C. It was built in honor of George Washington, who led the country to independence and then became its first President. The Washington Monument is open daily except July 4 and December 25.

The admission is free and if you want a ticket you will need to go to the Washington Monument Lodge, located along 15th Street, opens at 8:30 a.m. for distribution of free, same day, timed tickets on a first come first serve basis. The One person may pick up as many as six tickets as well as select their preferred ticket time from what remains available for that operating day. All individuals (including children) must have a ticket.

If you wish, you can also reserve your tickets by visiting the National Park Service ticket website at http://www.recreation.gov, or by calling 1.877.444.6777. Note that there is a $1.50 service charge per ticket. These tickets may be picked up at the “will call” window of the Washington Monument Lodge on the day of your tour.

Tips: During peak season, tickets run out quickly and the line for tickets forms at 7:00 a.m, so get early…

Bill Yosses White House Honey Cupcakes

The DC cupcake craze has not seemed to dissipate over the past few years. The cupcakeries are still thriving in the district. This recipe was posted on the Obama Foodorama website in 2009. Since we are still enjoying cupcakes in the district, a recipe fit for the president seems most appropriate. The recipe uses honey instead of refined white sugar as a sweetener. The amount of butter used is also minimal, so these sweeties aren’t too bad for you! Please find the recipe below. We will definitely be adding this recipe to be adding these to our continental breakfast repertoire.

Bill Yosses’s White House Honey Cupcakes
Ingredients
1/4 cup softened butter
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup honey
2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
For the Icing
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup honey
3 Tbsp. lemon juice

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake papers.

2. In a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, on high speed. Mix in honey, eggs, buttermilk and vanilla until blended, on medium speed.

3. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt, then mix into the batter until just blended. Scoop the batter into the cupcake cups evenly.

4. Bake for about 20 minutes; cupcakes are done when tops spring back lightly to the touch.

Prepare icing
In a small sauce pan, whisk ingredients over medium heat until sugars dissolve together; keep whisking to avoid clumps. Using a spoon, drizzle over the tops of cupcakes, or carefully pour over cupcakes.

Makes one dozen cupcakes.

Bon Appetit!

AFTER HEALTH CARE REFORM – SHARE THE BURDEN – SAMARITAN MINISTRIES

I just wanted to share something that someone shared with us a few years ago when I was shopping for affordable health insurance coverage for my family.  At the time we were self employed and had cancelled our $1000 per month health insurance policy because we could no longer afford it.   One of our guests overheard me on the phone and later told me about this wonderful  organization called Samaritan Ministries where Christians share each others burden of paying for health insurance costs.   We have had Two needs published since becoming a member, and it is a wonderful feeling to know that there are thousand of members out there ready to send in their monthly share directly to you to help during your time of financial need.
