American Guest House Bed and Breakfast helps Clean the World
First bed and breakfast in Washington, D.C. to join hospitality program that recycles guest room soaps and bottled amenities to help stop the spread of preventable diseases
WASHINGTON, D.C and ORLANDO, Fla. – April 25, 2011 — American Guest House Bed and Breakfast has partnered with Clean the World, an Orlando, Fla.-based social enterprise, to collect and recycle hotel soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and gels to help fight the global spread of preventable diseases. The soaps collected at American Guest House Bed and Breakfast will be shipped to Clean the World for recycling and distribution around the world.
Clean the World Inc. is the largest global recycler of hotel amenities, and in just two years of operation has distributed more than 8 million bars of soap to children and families in the United States, Haiti and more than 40 countries worldwide.
Each day 9,000 children around the world die from diseases such as acute respiratory illness and diarrheal diseases that can be prevented by washing with bar soap. Clean the World has a mission to put soap in the hands of people who need it most to improve hygiene and sanitation conditions.
“American Guest House Bed and Breakfast is thrilled to announce our partnership with Clean the World,” says Lucia Rosan, general manager of the American Guest House Bed and Breakfast in Washington, D.C. “Our guests, especially business travelers, have expressed a strong interest in environmental ‘green’ initiatives. With this Clean the World partnership in place, not only will we be able to recycle our soap and shampoos, but we will be helping people around the world.”
Clean the World has partnered with more than 1,000 hotel and bed-and-breakfast properties in North America to provide soaps and bottled amenities to people in need. While doing so, the organization has also fulfilled a valuable environmental mission by diverting an estimated 550 tons of hotel waste from polluting landfills in the United States and Canada.
“Everywhere in the United States and the world people look to Washington, D.C. for leadership, and American Guest House provides that by joining our Clean the World hospitality program,” says Shawn Seipler, executive director of Clean the World. “By becoming our first B&B partner in the nation’s capital, American Guest House can confidently proclaim its environmental awareness and commitment to a more sustainable, healthier future for children and families worldwide.”
