Washington DC’s Wine Country: Loudon County

As the East Coast’s version of Napa Valley in California, Loudon County holds a variety of wineries that will delight any wine connoisseur. There you will find a part of Virginia that is dedicated horse country, along with over 23 wineries in the area sprinkled around a few charming towns. Loudon County is only 25 miles outside of Washington, D.C., so it can easily turn in to a day trip.

Certain Wineries also offer guided food and wine tours. The Lansdowne Food and Wine Camp offers a wine class where “campers” learn about pairing from “a highly specialized perspective” led by award-winning sommelier, Mary Watson-DeLauder. Most wineries have a wine shop available on the premise and tastings are generally encouraged. For a reference guide to the tour and tasting times, see their Quick Reference Chart.

Loudon County also prides itself in having a rich historic background with a variety of sites, historic homes and museums for visitors to enjoy. For a better idea on how to get there, see their transportation guide.
